Here are some facts about Alpaca Breeding:


  • A bred female’s average gestation is 11.5 months.

  • A “sire” is the father.

  • A “dam” is the mother.

  • Induced ovulation comes following physical copulation between the dam and the sire.

  • The “cria” (baby alpaca) weighs between 12-18 lbs when born.

  • Most alpacas are weaned at four to seven month of age.
